If we wish to imagine a world where persistent AR layers augment the world we see through our futuristic glasses, lenses or neural interfaces we must also imagine a technology that allows every device to agree, with millimeter precision, where things are in the world. GPS can't get us there.
Sneakerland is an AR game about collecting digital and physical sneakers motivating sneakerheads visit different locations and scan the environment to win rare sneakers and, in turn, generate crowdsource data to create a create a high-resolution 3D copy of our world, complete with our indoor spaces to create a persistent AR layer. The goal of this project is to crowdsource vision-based positioning capabilities for this parallel world and establish an open- source location system “BRED” based on the map, which is formed by feature points. All data used to create map are from mobile phone-level sensors (monocular camera, imu, GPS).
